Converting from IE Mail and News to Communicator
Question:
How do I convert from Microsoft Internet Explorer and IE Mail and
News to Netscape Communicator?
Answer:
1. Mail folders.
The problem with that is that MS Internet Mail and News stores
information in proprietary format, while Netscape mailboxes are in
standard UNIX mailbox format (RFC 822 compliant). The format is
proprietary to such an extant that there is no easy way to move
mailboxes even between Internet Mail and News and Exchange client!
One thing that might work but is rather cumbersome is to have user
forward saved e-mails to themselves and then retrieve them with
Communicator.
You can also convert messages from IE to Eudora format, using
several available tool, a decent one is Microsoft Internet Mail to
Eudora converter at
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Park/9276/msie2eu.html
Then follow directions in our "How to convert Eudora mail messages
for use in Navigator".
2. Address book has similar problem, since Internet Mail and News
stores names in proprietary format, incompatible with ldif
standard Internet LDAP interchange format). There is also no
Export function in IE mail.
There are several external tools that help you with this
migration. One is Interguru's E-mail Address Conversions,
available at http://www.interguru.com/mailconv.htm .
3. If you want to convert IE shortcuts to bookmarks, take a look
at these tools:
* webOBJ Bookmark Importer for Windows 95/NT 4.0 - a plug-in
for transfering bookmarks from IE to Navigator
* http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lakes/6520/ieconverter.zip
- IE Convertor, a nice shareware tool.
* http://mach5.noc.drexel.edu/navex/ - NavEX, a freeware
conversion tool.
